When I found out I was pregnant, I was really excited to carry on my cultural heritage to the next generation by fully parenting Russian-style
I think it's possible to raise the kids with a certain language without also passing on the entire culture that is associated with it.
Knowing Belarusian helped me right after I moved to the United States, because it allowed me to communicate and become friends with all the Polish kids in my ESL class long before I learned English.
For me, teaching my kids Russian was never a matter of debate. Our whole family is Russian so, naturally, we speak Russian at home. Russian was my kids’ first language.
So why did we immigrate to America? We didn’t want our children and grandchildren to go through the same humiliations that we did.
I’m proud of my background and I genuinely hope my kids grow up to be proud of it too.
“Where are you from?” is a question I often hear from people who I just met. It’s not about how I look.
